Susan Altman is a primarily self-taught artist, although she got her start in mosaics from Ariel Finelt Shoemaker. Susan works as a communications professional, focusing on environment, sustainability, and climate change. An editor, writer, graphic designer, and project manager, she manages the academic journal Global Environmental Politics, which is published by MIT Press. Susan has lived in Medford for 26 years.
Susan Altman loves colors and building things, and likes her art to serve a function. She loves the uniqueness of mosaics: no two pieces are ever quite the same. She has recently begun making three-dimensional mosaics and art that explores the global climate crisis. She has made mirrors, frames, plant containers, boxes, and lighting fixtures. Susan tries to use recycled materials as much as possible. Susan also has a photography sideline, focusing on unexpected aspects and views of our everyday surroundings.
