Niels LaWhite grew up in rural Vermont and became hooked on glassblowing while at MIT in 1985. He spent many years developing technique and intuition while working with teachers and visiting artists in the MIT glass community. Continuing as a volunteer teacher, Niels is now focused on the artistic potential of glass as an expressive medium.
I have always been fascinated by different techniques for color application in glass. Tiny changes can make noticeable effects, which grow as the glass is blown. Through experimentation, such ideas are fleshed out, while exploring artistic potential in various forms of blown pieces. More recently, I have been pushing to achieve an organic aesthetic, such as a still life or landscape. Imagery is expressed (mapped onto) a vase form, which can be enjoyed from any viewing angle whether empty or enhanced with flowers.
