Artist Statement

Playing with mud and fire are activities that I've enjoyed since I was a child. It seems nearly universal that humans have the same primal urges. As an adult, making pottery satisfies both of those needs for me. That one then generates useful objects for eating, drinking and ritual makes the activity all the more compelling. I feel connected to a millenia-long, honorable craft that is about sustenance of physical and spiritual life. Pottery has been made by people wherever clay is found... all around the world!

Last year, in amongst all my making and peddling of pots was the addition of a pug mill and bisque kiln to the studio and the rebuilding of a glaze kiln in Randolph in which I fire. So I'm looking forward to this new year, year 6 back at the wheel and 5 in business, with my goal to become self supporting as a potter more clearly in sight. I won't be quitting my 'day job' just yet - I'm self-employed as an interior painter, but with your continued support I might just get there!

I look forward to seeing old and new friends, sending pots home to be used and loved, and enjoying the thriving art and craft community of West Medford.
