David Chia
Biography
David Chia is a board member of the West Medford
Open Studios (WMOS). Among his responsibilities for WMOS is promoting
and organizing the readings by poets, essayists, and novelists. Since
2001, he has also read his own work at WMOS.
David has taken a number of classes in fiction and creative writing at the
Cambridge Center of Adult Education and the Arlington Center for the Arts.
Together with several other students from one of these classes, he co-founded
the Prescott Street Writers’ Group. From 1991 to 2000, group members
shared their poetry and fiction on a regular basis. David is currently a
member of the writers’ group of the Medford Public Library. His work
has been published in several editions of the Doc Kountze Annual. David has
also received writing grants from the Medford Arts Council in 2002 and 2004.
During the day, David is a Senior Consultant for the transportation group
of Planners Collaborative, Inc. in Boston, MA. His specialty field is transportation
for the elderly and disabled. He has authored over a dozen reports that have
been published by the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) and the Transportation Research Board. He served as
editor for FTA's newsletter on rail safety. David has a B.S. in Engineering
and Applied Science from Yale University and a S.M. in Technology & Policy
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a reporter and senior
editor for the Yale Daily News and an opinion writer for The Tech, MIT's
student newspaper.
Statement
"Write what you know." I try to do that. I am interested
in the details of everyday life of ordinary and not so ordinary people.
The big decisions and actions in life arise from an accumulation
of seemingly small deeds and casual observations and conversations.
